yeah it was the only pub in ireland where the smoking ban was 100% ignored (so they say, but it was ignored in the country left right and centre)

Dunno about the smoke damage shutting down, but basically the owners decided to ignore the smoking ban and got in a bit of trouble for it. There were rumours that Galway County Council were going to back the owners in a court case, but nothing happened!!

They were closed for bout six months before the smoking ban came in, and they figured the government owed them for it

well i read in the paper that the place shut down for a while because the smoke damage was so bad that beer taps were melting and kegs were exploding
