The problem is that people associate the supposed 'fashion' with what is essentially music about emotions. Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Thrice, Thursday, Jimmy Eat World. These are 'emo' or 'emo hardcore' bands.
There are always people who follow fashions in music, and don't give a fuck about the underlying bands or their ethos. There are lots of them in Fibbers. Doesn't make them emo. Just makes them saps.
