If you dont watch any news then how do you expect to be in anyway decent as a Journalist. It is practically inpossible to become a decent and responsible journalist unless you are willing to do the dirty work for a long time and that means you will have to have a grounding in at least the basics of government and current legal and socio-political understandings. Any journalism that does not present a straight-forward unbiased view is not really journalism but editorialising. Or advertising. You should ALWAYS provide both sides of the argument or else you are just saying what one side wants to hear, you may as well go work for that side rather than be a journalist.
As for whether you are Academic or not. It'll all play against you in the long run. Some people can look at me and point out I spent a long time in college and I worked very hard in the latter part, but thats because the field I want to get into, much like journalism, is incredibly difficult to get into. If any aul mook could do it, they would! Your fellow students who are looking into every aspect of the course will probably get to do the stuff you want to cover as they will be more flexible and organised.
Not preaching to you, Im just pointing out the flaws in some strategies you might have.
Oh and if you are thinking of doing Gonzo Journalism or something akin to HST, realise that that genre of lifestyle and also that genre of society has long since passed and will unlikely suffer a resurgence!

im not unprepared to do the hard parts, i just have no interest in news and dont intend to look for a job in that area. im not sure what i want to do, and as for the idea that my classmates will do better than me, a lot of work in journalism is down to luck and experience as opposed to having a degree. and no, i dont intend to do the H. Thompson thing.
and as for me having not a whole lot of interest in parts of my subject, remember that Malcolm McLaren didn't want music fans to be in the Sex Pistols...... he wanted people that were completly uninfluenced, and therefore totally original!

Yeah but the Sex Pistols were shite!! Sorry to burst alot of peoples bubbles here but they were untalented moronic arseholes looking for their 15 mins. This has been proven by Johnny Cunty Rotten being on a Reality TV Show and reforming the band when he was broke!

Johnny Lydon isn't broke. He's a shrewd investor. That's not very punk at all... But he is a funny cunt, so that makes up for everything.

Well I didnt want to go there, but my beard just so how non-conformist I am!!! And since Im not a punk it further shows my non-conformiscity!! So none of you do it or else you'll be conforming to my standing and then you'll not be non-conformist you'll be conformist and that just sucks!!!
