Admiral Piett, one of Lord Vader's co-workers had this to say about the tense few moments leading up to our surprise.
"I think he knew something was up. He seemed oddly self aware. He kept asking me if his cowl was straight. I was really nervous because traditionally he doesn't like surprises and the results can be well ... deadly. But when he saw Ralph Edwards standing on the deck ... man, you should have seen the look on his helmet."
Edwards: Any long-term goals?
Vader: I'd like to find my son.
Edwards: Your long-lost son, Luke Skywalker? Won't that be an interesting reunion? Any plans?
Vader: I want to turn him evil ... or kill him. Whichever works best. He's a little hard headed and kind of whiny. I'll play it by ear.
